"The Poor Poet" (1839) is Carl Spitzweg's (1808–1885) most celebrated painting and one of the icons of German Biedermeier art. It depicts a poet in the humblest of attic rooms — wrapped in his coat, sheltered under a leaky umbrella, yet with a book in hand and joy in his heart. The original is today held in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
