Juan de Arellano (1614–1676) is the undisputed master of the Spanish Baroque flower piece. While other Spanish painters of his era favoured religious and mythological subjects, Arellano dedicated himself to the floral bouquet with a passion that gives his work a unique freshness and luminosity.

His compositions show magnificent arrangements of flowers in stone niches or against dark backgrounds — roses, tulips, irises, narcissi and poppies, some still jewelled with dewdrops — with a colour intensity and botanical accuracy that continues to fascinate. Building on the tradition of Dutch flower painting, Arellano developed in Madrid a distinctly warm, Mediterranean style of his own.
