Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744–1818) war eine der wenigen Frauen, die im 18. Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744–1818) was one of the very few women admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in the 18th century — as one of only four female members. Her still lifes unite the Dutch tradition of precise material painting with the elegant French taste of her era and were admired and collected by Marie-Antoinette.

"Still Life with Ham" is typical of her art: an apparently simple composition of everyday and table objects that, through a masterly treatment of light, colour and texture, becomes an image of quiet refinement. Ham, bottle, wine glass, tablecloth — each element is painted with a care that owed much to Chardin and made Vallayer-Coster a consummate master of her genre.
